Counter-Terrorism Awareness Training for U.S. Law Enforcement Officers

Course Description: This is a self-paced, web-based training program available to verified U.S. law enforcement personnel via the Internet (E-Learning course). It contains the same information as the one-day classroom lecture workshop Anti-Terrorism Training for Law Enforcement presented by the Michigan Regional Community Policing Institute.

Cost: Free. This E-Learning course project was supported by grant 2004CKWXK027 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Target Audience: U.S. Law Enforcement personnel only. Participants will be asked to provide sworn law enforcement verification.

Goals and Objectives of the Program: To provide a working knowledge of terrorist and criminal extremist groups and individuals, their activities and tactics, and how to recognize and report indicators of terrorism/criminal extremism.

  • Provide a working definition of terrorism and homeland security.
  • Recognize that terrorism prevention is the responsibility of all law enforcement, regardless of assignment.
  • Develop a working knowledge of both domestic and foreign terrorist/extremist groups.
  • Understand that each terrorist incident is often preceded by planning and preparation.
  • Recognize, identify and understand various terrorism indicators and warning signs exhibited by terrorists/extremists.
  • Identify the role of community policing in the prevention, response and mitigation of terrorism.
  • Understand the terrorists/extremists pose an enhanced threat to officer safety.

Command Officer Development Certificate Program (Blended Learning Format)

Course Description: The Command Officer Development Certificate program (formerly called Police Supervision Certificate Program) is offered via a blended course of instructional delivery of face-to-face classroom instruction with on-line learning. Each of the three course offered will require 36-hours of on-line learning plus attendance at three one-day classroom sessions, for a total of 60 instructional hours per course. Participants may complete one, two or all three courses. Successful completion of all three courses is required to receive the Command Officer Development Program Certificate. Identity Theft: Victim's Perspective

Course Description: This is an on-line self paced course. The participant will learn how to minimize risk and what to do if you or someone you know becomes a victim of identity theft.

Cost: $30 per person must be paid in advance of given access to the course. If 4 or more enroll at one time the cost is reduced to $25 per person.

Target Audience: Human Resource personnel, crime prevention officers, victim service providers, counselors, prosecutors, advocates, private and public investigators and detectives.

Goals and Objectives of the Program: To provide a working knowledge of terrorist and criminal extremist groups and individuals, their activities and tactics, and how to recognize and report indicators of terrorism/criminal extremism.

  • Define identity theft, provide an overview as to the scope and nature of the problem, and review research findings relative to victims and offenders.
  • Discuss various methods used to gain access to identifying information, how victims first learn of the theft, and how to reduce exposure to future theft opportunities.
  • Discuss victims' emotional reactions to identity theft.
  • Provide tools for victims and victim assistance providers to guide victims through the processes of emotional and financial recovery.
  • Discuss various policies and procedures relative to personal information security.
  • Discuss strategies for promoting identity theft prevention awareness in your community.
