Philosophy of the School
The prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, the preservation of peace, the safeguarding of civil rights, and the maintenance of social order with justice and freedom for all, are essential to the functioning of a democratic society.

To provide for this security, safety, peace, and freedom, public and private agencies at the local, state, and federal levels are engaged in activities designed to prevent crime and delinquency; intervene in criminal acts; apprehend offenders; adjudicate alleged offenses; redirect emergent criminal careers; promote safety and security in industrial and commercial organizations; increase highway safety; and to emphasize total community responsibility for these goals.

The School provides pre-professional education to prepare students for base-line careers in public and private service identified with the administration of criminal justice. The pre- professional curriculum is oriented to general education with particular emphasis upon the social sciences.

The program leading to the Master of Science in Criminal Justice is designed to improve the administration and planning components of the criminal justice system. The student who has earned a master's degree from the School of Criminal Justice will appreciate the diversity of issues confronting the criminal justice system and its sub-components and will be prepared to address these issues through the application of theoretical concepts in administrative and planning applications to public policy issues in crime control and the disposition of offenders.
