December 2007

Welcome to this edition of the D.A.R.E. Michigan State Training Center Email News. The purpose of this newsletter is to disseminate information to D.A.R.E. Officers in Michigan. We also want to provide a tool whereby we can interact with D.A.R.E. Officers by answering questions and receiving input.

Michigan D.A.R.E. Conference – June 18, 2008

Mark your Calendar now – the 2008 D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Conference will be held in partnership with the Schools Educators Police Liaison Association (SEPLA) conference to be held June 16-20, 2008, at the Mt. Pleasant Comfort Inn. The D.A.R.E. Conference will take place, one day only, parallel to the SEPLA conference on Wednesday, June 18th. Officers who have registered for and are attending the SEPLA conference will already be registered (and paid) for the D.A.R.E. Conference, but must mark “D.A.R.E.” on the registration form to indicate you will be attending the D.A.R.E. conference on Wednesday. Officers attending the one-day D.A.R.E. Conference only must register with the D.A.R.E. Training Center, and pay the D.A.R.E. conference rate. Cost and workshop topics are pending D.A.R.E. America’s requirements for 2008 state conferences.

Call for Presenters – Feedback received at the Rx-OTC trainings revealed an interest by officers to share best practices and see how others are presenting the NEW D.A.R.E. Lessons and Supplemental Lessons. The D.O.A.M. Executive Board and State Training Center are looking for officers who would be willing to model a lesson at this year’s State Conference. Guidelines and additional information can be found on the soon to be posted 2008 Michigan Conference web page (see link from http://www.michigandare.org/ or http://www1.cj.msu.edu/~outreach/dare/).

International D.A.R.E. Conference – August 12-14, 2008

The 21st Annual D.A.R.E. International Training Conference will take place in San Antonio, Texas, August 12-14, 2008. We’ve been to San Antonio before. Last year only two Michigan DARE officers attended the International DARE Conference in Nashville. Michigan needs a better representation at the Texas Conference. Texas does a great conference and there are lots of things in the immediate area for the entire family.

D.A.R.E. America Fundraising Programs

D.A.R.E. America is using table sales of merchandise outside various business establishments across Michigan to raise dollars. A portion of the income generated from these sales goes back to D.A.R.E. America to replace federal Byrne grant dollars that are no longer available through the U.S. Department of Justice. These table-sales of D.A.R.E. merchandise by Quantum sales personnel have created quite a furor in the state for both D.A.R.E. and non-D.A.R.E. communities. As a result D.A.R.E. America has sponsored two D.A.R.E./Innovage Fundraising Focus Group and Strategy sessions.

David Pappenheimer, Birch Run D.A.R.E. officer, attended one such meeting in Dallas, TX as Michigan D.A.R.E. Officers’ representative. Upon his return from Dallas, Dave scheduled and facilitated a November 8th meeting between the DOAM Executive Board members, the State Training Center Coordinator, other interested D.A.R.E. officer representatives, and two of the three Quantum marketing member offices in Michigan (Saginaw and Livonia). A full report of activities and strategies developed by the D.O.A.M. Board and Training Center is forthcoming and will soon be emailed to D.A.R.E. Officers, a hard copy sent via US Mail, and posted on the D.O.A.M. and Training Center web sites.

Volunteer Speaker Offer

Hello - My name is Stacy Endres and I am a Senior at Michigan State University. I will be graduating in the Spring with honors, and as a double major with a specialization. I have been on the Dean's List and worked two jobs my entire undergraduate career. The last day in finals week, I decided to celebrate by going out with some friends to a local bar. Because of a poor decision that was completely out of character, I was arrested and received Operating Under the Influence. This experience and the process I am going through will inevitably change what I have worked so hard to achieve. I was assigned community service, which I'm currently doing, but feel I should help younger people who all too often cave to peer pressure the way I did. I want to tell my story, or help in any way I can, so fewer people will make the choice to drink and drive. I want you to know this is not court ordered, this is simply one student trying to make a difference. If you feel that you would have a use for me, please let me know how I can be of service. My email address is endresst@msu.edu.
