FROM: Audrey Z. Martini, State Training Center Coordinator
RE: D.A.R.E. Officer Training School Scheduled
DATE: August 25, 2005

After a two-year lapse, the Michigan D.A.R.E. Training Center has scheduled a D.A.R.E. Officer Training School for September 19-29, 2005.  The School will be conducted at the Holiday Inn – Lansing West Conference Center, 7501 W. Saginaw Highway, Lansing, MI.

The Training Center and the D.A.R.E. Michigan Advisory Board are committed to keeping costs to the agency for this training as low as possible.  Prior DOT actual costs per officer (not including administrative salaries) have averaged $1,300.  Approximately $500 of that was covered by grant monies and/or dollars from the D.A.R.E. Michigan Advisory Board.  Those dollars are no longer available.  With approval of D.A.R.E. America, we have structured this DOT to provide the following:

1.      New officers who wish to be D.A.R. E. certified to teach both the Elementary and Middle School D.A.R.E. curriculum and be certified D.A.R.E. School Resource Officer must attend all 9 days of the training.  These officers will be required to stay on-site and not commute from home the nights of Wednesday and Thursday, September 21st and 22nd and the nights from Sunday (9/25/05) evening of the second week extending through Wednesday night (9/28/05).  The cost for these 9 days will be $900 and will cover all materials; eight lunches, six breakfasts, morning and afternoon break refreshments for two weeks and six nights lodging (double occupancy).

2.      Currently certified Elementary only D.A.R.E. Instructors who wish to be certified to also teach Middle School must attend Friday, September 23 and Monday, September 26, 2005.  The cost will be $300.  Officers will be required to stay on-site Thursday evening September 22nd and Sunday evening September 25th.  Also included are all materials, two lunches, 2 breakfasts, morning and afternoon break refreshments and two nights lodging (double occupancy).

3.      Currently certified Elementary and/or Middle School only D.A.R.E Instructors who wish to be certified D.A.R.E. School Resource Officers must attend Tuesday, September 20th and Thursday, September 22nd mornings and all day Wednesday, September 21st.  The cost will be $200 and will cover all materials, lunch on Wednesday (9/21/2005), and morning and afternoon breaks as applicable for the three days.  Lodging will be on your own.

4.      Previously D.A.R.E. certified Instructors who have been decertified because they have not taught the D.A.R.E. curriculum in the past two years who wish to be re-certified to teach both the Elementary and Middle School D.A.R.E. curriculum and be certified D.A.R.E. School Resource Officers must attend all 9 days of training – see item #1 above.

Officers who are attending only Friday (September 23 and Monday, September 26th (Middle School certification) and all officers attending the first three days of week one will not be required to stay on-site, but will be held accountable for being in the classroom, ready to fully participate by 7:45am each morning.  Those who because of distance must stay on-site will be responsible for their lodging expenses during this time.  The hotel rate is $45 per night.  Training Center staff will be available (should you so desire assistance) to work with your agency to coordinate double occupancy with the hotel facility and others attending the DOT who must also remain on site throughout the week.

Other changes we have made to cut costs include:

To reserve a slot, we must receive the applicable tuition payment.  Seats will not be held unless we have that payment.  Departments intending to register an individual for training must also submit the name of the officer at least 3 weeks prior to the first day of the DOT.  As a reminder, the D.A.R.E. America policy requires D.A.R.E. officers to be certified uniformed police officers in their state.  Additionally, the officer must have completed a minimum of 2 full years’ service as an officer.

Reservation for slots will be based on receipt of tuition on a first-come, first-serve basis.  For more information contact Bridget Scott (517) 432-2252 or bridget.scott@ssc.msu.edu.
