The D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center at Michigan State University is a diverse team of individuals, committed to facilitating a pro-active, collaborative community approach to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. The Center will do this by:
- Serving as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms.
- Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in our schools and communities.
- Serving as an informational resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E. message.
- Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.
Training Center Staff:
Audrey Z. Martini is the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center Coordinator . Audrey received her Bachelor of Science degree in Police Administration from Michigan State University in 1968. She immediately went to work with the Detroit Police Department Women’s Division and remained with Detroit until her retirement in 1987. In 1981, while with Detroit, Audrey earned her Masters degree in Urban Planning. At the time of her retirement, Audrey had reached the rank of Administrative Lieutenant, for the Crimes Against Persons (Armed Robbery and Sex Crimes) Section. After retiring in 1987 she immediately took a position with the Criminal Justice and Law Center at Lansing Community College, as a special projects coordinator. She also taught in the police academy. In 1991, while working on her doctorate at Michigan State University, Audrey accepted a position with the School of Criminal Justice where she is currently Director of Outreach.
Sue Smith, is the Educational Consultant for the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1965. For the next 33 years, she taught various K-6 classes at Carman Ainsworth School District in Flint, Michigan – although most of her experience has been with the sixth grade curriculum. Carman Ainsworth was one of the first schools in Michigan to participate in the D.A.R.E. program and Mrs. Smith’s classroom was the pilot classroom for introduction of that curriculum. She has received the D.A.R.E. Teacher of the Year Award. Since retirement, Sue continues to participate in educational development through tutoring at the junior high level and working to develop an educational enrichment program for Flint senior citizens.
