Using the Internet to Enhance Identity Theft Investigation
- Three Part Series
- Part 1 — A six hour hands-on
computer workshop that introduces the participant
to basic skills designed
to enhance identity theft investigations.
Who Should Attend:
- Police officers
- Detectives
- Fraud investigators
- Prosecutors
- Judges
- Private security investigators responsible for
investigating ID theft crimes
Goals/Objectives:
- Discuss why identity theft is the "crime
of choice"
- Examine the role of technology in identity theft
crimes and identity theft facilitated crimes such
as terrorism through case examples and exercises
- Determine the types of information available on
the World Wide Web, where to find the information,
and its validity
- Compare the information gathering techniques as
presented in the Al Queda training manual to those
used by criminal justice professionals
- Learn to use various software programs
to preserve the "techno-trails" or chain of online
evidence
- Discuss the difference between IP addresses and
domain names
- Examine software programs and online tools for
gathering information pertaining to IP addresses
and domain names
- Address the investigative obstacles associated
with domain name registrations
- Learn how to find "lost" web sites
and the difference between archived and cached
web sites using case
examples
- Understand the types of search engines and how
to use them effectively to find information
- Visit discussion groups and web sites used by perpetrators
of identity theft crimes and identity theft facilitated
crimes
- Overview of online databases designed to augment
identity theft related investigations
- Part 2 — A hands-on workshop
that will build on the information presented in part
one of the series.
Participants should bring a laptop with wireless Internet
capabilities and if possible an active case for which
they are seeking information on the Internet.

Goals/Objectives:
- Demonstrate how to "mine" the Internet
to access information relevant to an identity theft
investigation
- Verify authenticity of Internet information
- Part 3 — A hands-on workshop
that will build on the information presented in parts
one and two of
the series. Participants should bring a laptop with
wireless Internet access capabilities and if possible
an active case for which they are seeking information
on the Internet.

completed parts one and two of the series)

- Trace e-mail and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses
- Find "archived" web sites
- Discuss latest in computer forensics trends
- Discuss chair of evidence issues relative to online
investigations
