Current Research and Research Opportunities

Study of Prisoner on Prisoner Sexual Assault

So far, this study has involved collecting data from multiple sources (but not interviews with prisoners) and developing models to predict which prisoners are likely to perpetrate sexual assaults on other inmates, and which are likely to be victimized. Qualitative analysis has produced descriptive information on the incidents verified by a Misconduct Hearing between 1998 and 2006. Next steps will be to use the literature and the findings to develop an interview instrument that will allow increased understanding of the dynamics of the incidents.

Juvenile Delinquency: Analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Data

This data set is collected by the US Department of Labor, and the 1997 cohort included about 2000 youth aged 12 and 13. The youth have been interviewed every year since. We have addressed a number of challenging issues with the data: the creation of a number of theoretically meaningful variables, using the software STATA to handle the weighting in the data, and using negative binomial regression to handle the skewed count data that indicates delinquency. Right now, there are two projects with these data. One examines individual and contextual predictors of girls' assaultive behavior. The other identifies the predictors of resilience on delinquency.

Gender Responsive and Traditional Probation and Parole Tactics for Women Offenders

This is a book in progress.

Police Stress and Coping

We surveyed police in the US about 12 years ago, and two years ago repeated the survey in both the US and South Korea. These data were the basis for numerous articles that showed that workplace problems predict stress, but individual attempts to cope with these problems do not reduce stress. Some approaches actually increase stress. The next step is to work with a police organization to develop, implement, and evaluate an intervention that would effectively address the causes of police stress that are located in the workplace.

Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities

Datasets on Hispanic, South Asian, and Vietnamese immigrants are being used as the basis for articles.
