
John Smykla coordinated the effort to collect and compile information
on the combined totals of various activities of the alum since graduation.
The work history of the reporting group (approximately half of all the
alum) amounted to 281 years in the educational field and 114 years in an
agency other than education.
Collectively, the
group published 40 books, 372 journal articles, and 106 book chapters.
Sixty-eight editorships were held and there were 59 memberships on public
boards. The group was awarded in excess of $16 million in grants.
Watza to Serve on MSUAA Board
Michael J. Watza ('78) of Northville, Michigan has been appointed to
the Michigan State University Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Michael is an attorney with Kitch, Drutchas, Wagner & Kennedy law firm
in Detroit. He currently serves as a member of the School of Criminal Justice
Alumni Board and the Detroit College of Law Alumni Board. He has also served
as a Legislative Committee member of the MSU National Alumni Association.

Dennis Payne, Associate Professor at the School of Criminal Justice,
retired Lt. Colonel with the Michigan State Police, recently found
this article and thought others might enjoy it as much as he did. This

Enrollment in Michigan State College is under way for the newly inaugurated police training course. Early results prove interest in this course responsible to a great extent in swelling the size of the freshman class.
The plan calls for a five-year course, during which the prospective police officer would follow a two-year basic college curriculum, completing his training by obtaining a commission in the R.O.T.C. and spending 18 months in residence at the state police barracks in East Lansing. Emphasis on the study of criminal law, evidence, chemistry, sociology, and physics would be stressed.
Many police departments of the state have dropped their training schools despite the fact that police work has become a profession with a wide field for properly trained men. Insurance and law firms are continually seeking trained investigators and a demand for competent men in small departments is growing...

CJ Alumni Board Re-Elects Four
At the annual spring criminal justice Board of Directors meeting April
11, 1997, the Board re-elected four incumbents for the 1997-2000 term;
Louise Alderson, Robert Engel, Eva Medrano and Jim Peacock. Gregory Bria
was elected to fill the fifth seat.
Greg currently works for the Michigan Department of Corrections, Carson City Regional Facility where he is the Classification Director. He has served as a patrol officer with the Grand Ledge Police Department and is a Veteran of the U.S. Navy.
School Patriarchs
For the past 60 years, the MSU Alumni Association has invited graduates
of fifty or more years to return to campus for a special reunion each spring.
Graduates of the fiftieth year class are invited as guests of honor at
a reception in Kellogg Center and later at a luncheon that culminates with
a roll call induction into the Patriarch society. If you graduated in 1948
or before, start planning now to participate in the next Patriarch's Reunion,
May 29, 1998.
MSU-East Lansing Community Partnership
Efforts Recognized
MSU's Department of Public Safety Director, Bruce Benson, Ph.D. ('69
& '71) was recognized by the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and
other Ohio agencies for his participation in Ohio's third statewide conference
on Community Oriented Policing and for the community policing technical
assistance Director Benson has provided to 50 Ohio police departments since
1994.
In March 1996, MSU DPS, and the East Lansing Police Department joined
forces in an effort to address alcohol related offenses among minors, as
well as related crimes. Each department dedicated one officer (Robert Stanberry
('92) and Dan DeKorte), to work as a team promoting Education, Enlightenment
and Enforcement to liquor establishments, fraternities and sororities in
the East Lansing community.

Kurilchyk, Walter ('50) has published "Chasing Ghosts: A Cooperative American-Soviet Search to Recover Lost Aviation History." Ray, Brian E. ('78) has been promoted to First Lieutenant in the Executive Division, Executive Resource Section, Michigan State Police. Smith, Robert A. (BS '74, MS '77, PhD '89) Director of Chatham County Georgia Emergency Management Agency saw his agency receive the National Hurricane Conference 1997 Emergency Management Award for its emergency preparedness program and high level of preparedness for Hurricanes Bertha and Fran. Haller, Allan (BA '92) is currently attending the 61st Mid-Michigan Police Academy. Upon graduation in November, will join the MSU Department of Public Safety. Dye, Steven, (BA '97) will follow in his father's footsteps as a police officer, when he graduates from the 61st Mid-Michigan Police Academy and joins MSU's Department of Public Safety. |
