25th PhD Anniversary Reception Held
An anniversary reception, celebrating 25 years of the Ph.D. program was held in March in Louisville, Kentucky in conjunction with the Annual ACJS Conference. A check for $2,350 was presented to Merry on behalf of the alumni to assist the School's Criminal Justice Graduate Endowment Fund.

John Smykla coordinated the effort to collect and compile information on the combined totals of various activities of the alum since graduation. The work history of the reporting group (approximately half of all the alum) amounted to 281 years in the educational field and 114 years in an agency other than education.

Collectively, the group published 40 books, 372 journal articles, and 106 book chapters. Sixty-eight editorships were held and there were 59 memberships on public boards. The group was awarded in excess of $16 million in grants.

Remember when...
Dennis Payne, Associate Professor at the School of Criminal Justice,
retired Lt. Colonel with the Michigan State Police, recently found this article and thought others might enjoy it as much as he did. This is reprinted from the October 1935 issue of The State Trooper. The article was written by Kenneth C. Park.

The tentative curriculum outlined in the article included 30 credits for 18 months of satisfactory training under the immediate direction of the Michigan State Police, six months of which must be in residence at barracks.

What Happens to Your Alumni Dues . . .
It is IMPORTANT that you designate a constituent association (Criminal Justice) on all your membership applications. Otherwise, the entire amount of your dues will be retained by the MSU Alumni Association. Using this application insures $10 of the dues will be forwarded to the CJ Alumni Association. This is your opportunity to become an Alumni Member, if you are not already. Fill this out and return with your check or credit card information to: MSU Alumni Association, 108 Union Building, East Lansing, MI 48824.

CJ Alumni Board Re-Elects Four
At the annual spring criminal justice Board of Directors meeting April 11, 1997, the Board re-elected four incumbents for the 1997-2000 term; Louise Alderson, Robert Engel, Eva Medrano and Jim Peacock. Gregory Bria was elected to fill the fifth seat.

Greg currently works for the Michigan Department of Corrections, Carson City Regional Facility where he is the Classification Director. He has served as a patrol officer with the Grand Ledge Police Department and is a Veteran of the U.S. Navy.

School Patriarchs
For the past 60 years, the MSU Alumni Association has invited graduates of fifty or more years to return to campus for a special reunion each spring. Graduates of the fiftieth year class are invited as guests of honor at a reception in Kellogg Center and later at a luncheon that culminates with a roll call induction into the Patriarch society. If you graduated in 1948 or before, start planning now to participate in the next Patriarch's Reunion, May 29, 1998.

In March 1996, MSU DPS, and the East Lansing Police Department joined forces in an effort to address alcohol related offenses among minors, as well as related crimes. Each department dedicated one officer (Robert Stanberry ('92) and Dan DeKorte), to work as a team promoting Education, Enlightenment and Enforcement to liquor establishments, fraternities and sororities in the East Lansing community.
